Emergencies and Disasters
With all of the recent disasters that have been occurring in the world, more and more individuals and families are becoming aware that no one is immune from these adversities. In the year 2006, 52 presidential disaster declarations were made in the United States; and already, as of the 16th of January of 2007, six emergencies and disasters have been declared for the United States. Though the most common emergencies and disasters have been severe weather storms, flooding, and landslides; we have been told that many areas, especially along the Wasatch front, are at risk for earthquakes.
The Wasatch range sits on a fault line which stretches 240 miles from central Utah into Idaho, where rock, grinding slowly, lifts the mountains and produces earthquakes. An article by CNN stated that “each of the fault’s several segments is capable of producing up to a magnitude of 7.5 earthquake.”
The list of disasters is extensive. Disasters can be anything from tsunamis and landslides to chemical spills and terrorism. Regardless of the disaster, with these thoughts in mind, we can become distraught and unsettled in our daily lives—unless we are prepared.
